What’s Stopping You? – 5 Tips for Making Money Without Leaving the House

Ever get tired of spending hours sitting in traffic just so you can spend 40 hours or more at a job you don’t like? According to CNN.com 75% of Americans commute to work each day. Being stuck in traffic can cause frustration, worry and even anxiety. The effects can be devastating to your physical and mental health. Why not skip the traffic and the commute by working remotely from the comforts of your home or anywhere in the world with an internet connection? Give yourself an opportunity to do what you love while enjoying the flexibility of working online.

Don’t believe it can be done? More and more business owners are realizing the benefits of allowing employees to telecommute or work from home. Usnews.com reports that telecommuting reduces stress and job turnover while increasing productivity and work life balance. Just a few weeks ago my girlfriend was able to land a full time online job. Another friend has been teaching online full time for the past 7 years and I have been teaching online for ten years and even wrote a book to help you work from home.   If you want to telecommute, ask for it and believe it can happen. What are you waiting on? Below are 5 tips you can use today to get you headed in the right direction:

1. Think Outside the Box

Look beyond traditional job sites like monster.com or careerbuilder.com. For those in the teaching field look beyond  higheredjobs.com or academiccareers.com.  You will definitely find online jobs on these sites but so will hundreds of others.  Do not focus solely on employment websites. Go directly to specific company websites where you want to work and search for their online listings. You should also search every job website imaginable by using words like telecommute, e-learning, home based,  virtual and online in front of “job/s” in the search field to get a larger list of online openings and opportunities.

2. Network

Join online networking groups at LinkedIn such as Adjunctpreneur, ableadjuncts, higheredjobs, onlinejobs or workfromhome. If you want to work for a specific company follow that company on LinkedIn or Facebook and network with other employees. You might even be able to talk to someone in human resources or get advice  on where to look for telecommuting positions and how to apply.  Jobs, tips and resources are posted in these groups as well as groups on Yahoo.com and Google.com.  Do not forget relevant social media sites. Many companies now have social media webpages, check those for virtual openings.

3. Get Experience

Get as much technology experience as possible in widely used learning management systems like eCollege and Blackboard as well as collaborative software and groupware. You should also get comfortable with various technologies used in online employment such as Video Sharing ie YouTube, Webinars, Video and Telephone Conferencing, Instant Messaging, Video Messaging and social media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Don’t forget to include your experience with productivity software like Word Processing, Email, Spreadsheets and Presentations. The more you can highlight these applications, skills and experience on your resume, the better.

4. Update Your Resume

Technology changes rapidly. Each new system or application learned must be detailed on your resume and job application.  So update them often. Hiring officials want to see your experience with the latest technology. Include buzz words in your resume that detail the specific criteria listed in each job announcement. If you are cold calling an employment prospect, make sure you know their needs then demonstrate how you have just what they are looking for in your resume.

5. Go For It

Whether you are actually applying for an open position through a job announcement,  sending a resume or cold calling hiring officials, just do it! Apply for at least 5 positions, one for each day of the week. You increase your chances of success by focusing on your goals and taking action to make them happen. Visualize yourself making lots of money working online from home in your pajamas. Want to work from home, what’s stopping you?

I hope you will take some time to think about what YOU want to achieve in YOUR life and begin thinking outside the box to live amazing today! If you liked this article please share it!
